Individuals, communities and society pay a huge cost in dealing with the effect of ACEs - wasted lives, premature death, effect on communities e.g. anti-social behaviour, healthcare, justice, education costs i.e. tax revenues.

People.Planet.Product Student Design Challenge

Did you know that 70% of the world’s population lacks access to an electric washing machine? That’s why The Washing Machine project was founded – to help alleviate the burden of handwashing clothes by providing displaced and low-income communities and households with an accessible, off grid washing solution. The Washing Machine Project have produced a manual, crank-handle washing machine called Divya that has been proven to save 75% of the time and 50% of the water taken to handwash clothes. The impact of this is huge, but we believe we can do more. We’ve devised the People.Planet.Product. Student Design Challenge to engage students with STEM backgrounds to get involved…you are the scientists, engineers, and mathematicians of tomorrow that are creating solutions that could help generations to come.

This challenge seeks to find an innovative technological solution that allows the detection of the illicit use (continuous manual use of mobile phone while driving) of mobile phones by drivers during vehicle circulation. The main objectives are to reduce road accidents in Portugal, by preventing occurrences caused by distracted driving due to the continuous manual use of mobile phones and, simultaneously, to help the police in its enforcement mission and a more effective management of the associated infractions.

Vocal Challenge - Golden Summer

Welcome to Vocal's Summer Fiction Series!This series is comprised of eight short fiction Challenges ranging in length from one week to eight weeks long. Each prompt is inspired by a different book from a traditional summer reading list, full of the classics that so many of us read and reread throughout childhood and adolescence to prepare for the school year ahead. We'll start with childhood classics like Matilda and Charlotte's Web, and work our way up through those high school staples like Catcher in the Rye and The Bluest Eye. It’s a little nostalgia, and a whole lot of creativity. Keep in mind that just because each prompt is inspired by an old classic doesn't mean that your story is required to draw inspiration from that story. Free to write in your own style, or your preferred genre. As long as you've taken the prompt into account, the rest is up to you.

A2A Challenge: Food Glass Jar Waste Depackaging Systems

Ever wondered what happens to the unsold and unwanted food at the grocery store?.... Globally, one-third of all food produced for human consumption is wasted between the farm gates and your dinner plate. This equates to 1 billion tonnes of wasted food, with the vast majority destined for landfill. However, this doesn’t just mean billions of squandered meals and lost lasagnes. Approximately 6%-8% of all greenhouse gas emissions are derived from waste food production which is equivalent to 4.4 gigatons of carbon dioxide.  Finding ways of reducing our food waste and cutting lost emissions is one of the biggest challenges facing society today.

Cleaner Indoor Air During Wildfires

The US EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) know the severe environmental impacts of wildfires, risking personal and public health. They are looking for new and innovative ways to improve air quality during wildfires for use across federal, state, local, and tribal levels. Air pollution, including smoke from wildfires, contributes to substantial adverse clinical, public health and economic impacts worldwide. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is partnering with federal, state, local, and tribal agencies to encourage the development of new, low-cost approaches to clean fine particulate matter (PM 2.5) from indoor air. In addition to affordability and particulate matter removal, solutions that offer added benefits (e.g., cooling, operable during a power outage) will be considered favorably.
